Oreck XL3
Weighing in at just over 4kg - light enough to lift with one hand - this cleaner also possesses retro good looks. It is at the more expensive end of the market, but the extra outlay buys you excellent corner-cleaning capability thanks to side brushes that pull in the dirt. Cleaning under sofas and beds is easy, too, because it can lie flat. Verdict Great looks and performance.

Sustainability, practicality and style can go hand-in-hand, with these environmentally friendly products for your home
Introducing: The XL1 by Oreck is a space-saving and lightweight upright vacuum cleaner with self-sealing 10.3L dustbags. It folds up to be stored away, weighs just 3.6kg, comes with 9.15m lead, and has automatic self-adjustment between different types of flooring. £229
Eco appeal: This model uses one third of the energy of competitive models (350 watts compared to the industry norm between 1600 and 2000 watts), made possible due to a special brush roll design that ensures a powerful clean is achieved without resorting to just suction and a high wattage motor. Performance is still guaranteed thanks to innovative top fill system: dirt goes into the top of the bag, not the bottom as in most cleaners, which means that power is not wasted pushing up yesterday's dirt to make room for the new debris.

SAVVY SHOPPER SAYS Although not the sexist model on the market, the new XL1 is really lightweight and extremely energy efficient. Instead or relying on suction power, it has thousands of specially shaped bristles in the brushbar that lift dirt from deep in the carpet.

SMART AND SLIMLINE
We love the styling of Oreck's latest model. Its slimline design makes it easy to store away when not in use and it has a long cable so you can move easily from room to room. The superior brush roll lifts and traps pet hair and dirt.

I'm no fan of the extended guarantees retailers try to sell you when you buy electrical products. The idea is that if it breaks when your manufacturers guarantee runs out, you’ve covered - but it'll cost you. That's why I like Oreck's vacuum cleaners. The XL3 comes with a three-year warranty and the XL10 is guaranteed for 10 years. They're not the cheapest vacs on the market - £299 and £429 respectively but they are built to be repaired and not replaced.

If the approach of summer fills you with dread because of hayfever, investing in a air purifier may help relieve symptoms by removing pollen from the room. The new Oreck Air 6000 air purifier filters out allergens, bacteria, dust, odours, pollutants and viruses in a six-stage process, before releasing cleaned air back into the room. It costs less to run than a 75W light bulb and the filter is washable.

Oreck has introduced its new range of XL upright vacuum cleaners. The company has been producing domestic cleaners for 40 years and says that its new range is packed with new ideas to make cleaning easier.
There are three models in the XL range, the XL3 at £299, the XL5 at £349 and the XL10 at £429. Generous warranties of three, five and 10 years respectively are offered, and the upright cleaners are sold as a dual cleaning system, with a handheld portable multi-vac included in the price. A year's supply of dust bags is also included.
Says Alison Robinson, Oreck's marketing manager: "We are all very excited about the new range of upright XL vacuum cleaners. The fresh styling and outstanding warranties, combined with Oreck's reputation for performance and ease of use, make the XL series a very attractive propostion for both retailers and consumers alike."
Oreck claims for its XL models the virtues of lightness (around 4.2kg), excellent peformance and low energy usage. Each model features special brush rolls to pick up dirt right into corners and a direct suction path, which the company says helps ensure no loss of power.
The cleaners also adjust automatically to the type of floor to ensure excellent cleaning on carpets and hard floors.
Its HEPA filtration system and anitbacterial dust-lock bags are also designed to ensure they are well suited to allergy sufferers, while the XL5 and XL10 models are said to be ideally suited to pet owners.
The XL3 and XL5 come with the standard handheld multi-vac (£99 when purchased separately), which has shoulder strap for ease of use and a set of nine attachments to get into all those awkward nooks and crannies. Its six-metre chord also makes it ideal for the car.
The XL10 model comes with the deluxe handheld multi-vac (£129 when purchased separately), which boasts enough power to pick up a 16lb bowling ball and can also be used as a blower.

Style: When it came out in 1963, the Oreck was half the weight of any other vacuum cleaners. Today’s version does…exactly the same as the original. And – shock! It has a bag rather than a modern cylinder.
Features: The 30ft cable allows you to vacuum further without unplugging. And it fills from the top, meaning it doesn’t have to suck as hard. Clever.

Doing the housework can now satisfy your sense of charity and your eco-conscience as well as your sense of style while requiring minimum exertion if you invest in the new PinkVac from Oreck. £30 of the model's £375 cost will go straight to Breast Cancer Care, increased to £60 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
The Oreck range of XL upright vacuum cleaners are lightweight, combining low energy usage - only 350w compared to an industry norm of between 1,600w and 2000w, less waste - with non-recyclable materials kept to a minimum, and are built to last with between three and seven-year warranties.
The special brush-roll design enables deep cleaning. It uses a low-wattage motor without having to resort to high energy suction, or too much elbow-grease.

Its suprisingly efficient, easy to maintain and excellent for stair, curtain or corner cleaning.

Oreck Restaurateur
Picks up dirt suprisingly well, so it's perfect if you need to run over carpets quickly. Its also very lightweight (making it easy to use on the stairs if you want to) and compact (the handle comes off and is in four sections so it's easily stored even when space is tight). The handle angles to clean under sofas, and there are four extra brushes (one in each of the corners) so you can get up close to the walls. Oreck offers a 10 year guarantee.

Weighing only 4.95kg, this is the lightest upright tested. It glides well across hard floors and carpet, and dust and pet hair pick-up was outstanding. The simple design earned top marks for ease of use and its self-sealing dust bags are easy to fit and remove. It can lie flat, allowing it to reach all the way under most furniture, and was easy to manoeuvre. This model includes a separate lightweight canister cleaner with a shoulder strap.

At first glance the Oreck XL5 probably wouldn't inspire the average bloke to leap up and start cleaning, even with its hypo-allergenic cleaning properties and handy 30ft cable. The secret to the Oreck's success is when it's switched on. Power up the XL5 and watch its headlights flare up: the beams will immediately conjure up images of motor racing and, hopefully, your man won't be able to resist a test drive.

It is a lightweight, but sturdy workhorse, and energy consumption is lower than many vacuum cleaners because its design focuses on the use of powerful brushes rather than suction.
There are no accessories weighing it down either. Instead, it comes with a separate small canister vacuum for cleaning furniture and curtains.
But the XL7's most fun gadget is a nifty headlight that lets you see the dirt it is about to suck up.
